Fullmoon meditation in Tampere

Event by Ananda Marga TampereHatanpään Puisto, 12 August 2022

Many of us feel the influence of the Moon on our lives – and after all, August is often great, big, and yellow.

In Ananda Marga, this full moon of August, which according to the Indian calendar is Shravanii Purnima, has a special significance. Namely, in 1939, the founder of Ananda Marga, Shrii Shrii Anandamurti was still a student in Kolkata or Calcutta.

On a full moon night, he was meditating on the banks of the Hoogly River when a man approached him from behind. Anandamurti turned and asked:

What do you want?

The tall man took out a dagger and said: If you value your life, you will give all the money and valuables you have.

I’m just a student, what valuables could someone like me have? said Anandamurti, and after a moment continued:

You were once a pickpocket and then you became a real thief. You went on armed robberies and now you are a famous criminal in this area. Kalicharan, what have you done with your life? Do you think you are doing justice and honor to your human life by doing something like this?

The man was surprised that the young man knew his name and spoke so directly. Eventually, he ended up having a conversation with Anandamurti and became the first person to be taught meditation by Anandamurti he ended his life of crime and retired as a hermit yogi. Therefore, in Ananda Marga, Shravanii Purnima is also a special day.

We will meet in Hatanpää park, a little towards the beach from the mansion. The moon doesn’t quite shine there in the middle of the trees, but there we can sing kirtan and meditate together in peace.
